Bangladesh Textile Sector Hit Hard by Gas Supply Disruption

The recent gas outage in Bangladesh has exposed the limited resilience of the country's textile sector. The shutdown of one of the two floating liquefied natural gas import terminals, Excelerate Energy's Moheshkhali Floating LNG terminal, deprived the national grid of about 17 million cubic meters of gas a day. This reduction in gas supplies forced manufacturers to cut production by up to 40%.

The outage was caused by a spark in a control panel at the terminal, according to Petrobangla. The disruption has had far-reaching consequences for Bangladesh's economy, particularly its textile sector, which is one of the country's main export earners.
