Bangladesh to Build 100MW Gas-Fired Power Plant on Bhola Island
The government of Bangladesh has announced plans to build a 100MW skid-mounted, gas-fired power plant on the Bhola island. The project aims to utilize the country's stranded natural and diversified energy sources to meet growing electricity demand. BPDB Chairman Md Rezaul Karim said that the plant will be fast-tracked to reduce reliance on costly imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and alleviate the current power crisis.
The suspension of operations at one of the two floating LNG terminals has resulted in a sharp fall in gas supply, affecting electricity generation of around 2,000MW. The new plant will directly tap into Bhola's significant gas reserves, estimated to be between 1.5-2 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), which have remained underutilized due to the lack of a transmission pipeline.
The project is expected to create jobs and stimulate local industries in the region. Skid-mounted power plants offer several advantages over traditional on-site construction methods, including faster project delivery and reduced construction risks.
