Bangladesh Turns to Myanmar for Natural Gas Amid Domestic Supply Crunch

Bangladesh is seeking to import natural gas from neighboring Myanmar through a pipeline as domestic supplies dwindle. Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood made the proposal during a meeting with Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe.

The proposal comes as Bangladesh's domestic gas production continues to decline, making the country increasingly dependent on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet demands from power plants and industries. Mahmood noted that Bangladesh has a substantial demand for natural gas and is interested in securing supplies from Myanmar through a pipeline.

The two sides also discussed reviving an earlier proposal to build a gas pipeline from Myanmar to Chattogram, as well as the possibility of supplying gas to Bangladesh in the form of LNG. The Myanmar ambassador responded positively to the proposal and suggested reviewing the matter through meetings of the Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Technical Committee.
