Bangladesh Unveils Plans to Boost Gas Supply Amid Industrial Crisis

The government of Bangladesh has unveiled plans to address the persistent gas supply crisis in the industrial sector. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman outlined the strategies during a question-answer session in parliament, citing the need for increased domestic production and new LNG imports.

To boost domestic production, the government aims to drill 150 new wells by 2030-31 and conduct extensive seismic surveys to discover new gas reserves. Exploration works will also be conducted on offshore blocks, with foreign companies invited to participate through a tender process that closes in November.

In addition to increasing domestic supply, the government plans to establish two new LNG terminals: one floating terminal in Cox's Bazar and a land-based terminal in Matarbaril. Regasification from these terminals is expected to begin by 2028 and 2030, respectively.
