Bangladesh Weighs Higher Costs for Faster Chinese LNG Terminal Amid Gas Crisis

Bangladesh is considering accepting higher costs to secure a floating LNG terminal from China as soon as possible. The government, led by Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, views getting an FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) quickly as the top priority in addressing the country's gas and electricity shortages.

The current regasification capacity of the two existing FSRUs is around 1.1 billion cubic feet of gas per day, which is insufficient to meet the demand for imported LNG. The government has placed an urgent order with China for a new FSRU, expected to be delivered in approximately 18 months.

Zahed emphasized that securing the FSRU alone is not enough; necessary infrastructure development, including transmission pipelines, is also required to supply gas from the terminal. He acknowledged that accepting additional costs may be necessary due to the pressing need for a faster solution.
