Bangladesh Wheat Flour Prices Rise Despite Record Imports

The price of wheat flour in Bangladesh has continued to rise despite record imports in the previous marketing year. According to the USDA Grain and Feed Update, the average retail price of unpacked coarse wheat flour reached Tk47.5 per kilogram in July 2026, up around 12% from Tk42.4 a year earlier.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh reported that the price of loose atta rose 3.16% in a month, while loose fine flour increased 8% and packet fine flour 14.29%. Economist Dr Jahangir Alam Khan warned that higher international wheat prices and rising import costs would put pressure on the country's budget and constrain its ability to import sufficient quantities.

Imports are expected to decline by 10.8% in the 2026/27 marketing year, from an estimated 7.4 million tonnes imported in 2025/26. Despite this, wheat consumption is projected to increase due to growing demand for wheat flour from households and the food-processing industry.

Domestic wheat production remains stagnant, meeting only around 10% of the country's total wheat demand. The USDA estimates that total wheat supply will be 9.08 million tonnes in 2026/27, with ending stocks projected at around 973,000 tonnes.
