Bangladesh's Largest Refinery Set to Start Production in March 2027
TK Group's subsidiary Super Petrochemical PLC is on track to become Bangladesh's largest refinery by March 2027, when it will start production after completing an expansion that adds 1.7 million tonnes of refining capacity.
This brings the company's total production capacity to 2.2 million tonnes and will allow domestic refiners to meet 56.92 percent of national fuel demand.
The expansion is expected to reduce the state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) annual bill by $200 million while stabilizing local supply, according to Super Petrochemical.
Currently, BPC relies on costly refined imports due to limited domestic refining capacity, with almost two-thirds of its fuel import bill going towards refined products.
Professor M Tamim, an energy expert and vice-chancellor of Independent University, Bangladesh, believes that if private sector expands refinery and storage capacity, processes crude oil, and supplies the fuel to BPC, then the corporation's costs should fall.
