The British Columbia government has accelerated the expansion of the Tilbury LNG fuel facility. The site, which has been in operation since 1971 as a natural gas storage facility, is now producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) for vessels and collaborating with the Vancouver Port authority to develop a marine refueling service.

According to Minister Dix, LNG is significantly cleaner than conventional marine fuels like diesel. The expansion will play a key role in decarbonizing domestic and global shipping, bringing prosperity and progress to the province, improving emissions reductions, and investing in B.C. at a time when it's essential for the province.

FortisBC's David Hutchins, CEO of Fortis Inc., emphasizes that the Tilbury expansion supports the movement of goods and materials while building on the company's partnership with government and First Nations. The LNG facility already supplies two local customers, Seaspan Ferries and BC Ferries, and the expansion will help position Vancouver as a leading LNG marine fueling hub on North America's West Coast.

The province says that another proposed expansion of the facility, known as Tilbury Phase 2, continues to work its way through B.C.'s environmental assessment process. The public can comment until July 27, 2026, and a decision for Phase 2 is anticipated in late 2026.
