BC LNG Projects: A Cleaner Energy Source Than Coal
A recent article in The Walrus criticized the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in British Columbia, claiming they pose a climate risk to local communities. However, experts argue that LNG is a cleaner energy source than coal and crude oil.
The Haisla Nation, which has enthusiastically endorsed the projects, views them as key to economic development and self-sufficiency. In fact, Cedar LNG is majority-owned by the Haisla, who have announced their commitment to 'sustainable, nation-building developments.'
LNG Canada, the largest private-sector investment in Canadian history, loaded its first cargo last year and has generated over $5.8 billion in local contracting, including $4.9 billion for Indigenous-owned businesses.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), 99% of LNG consumed in 2024 had lower lifecycle emissions than coal, at about 25% less. The IEA also notes that LNG is an effective displacement fuel for coal, particularly in Asia where most coal demand is located.
New rules on methane are expected to cut emissions by 72% below 2012 levels by 2030, making British Columbia's LNG production some of the cleanest and most responsible in the world.
