Belgium Relies Heavily on Russian LNG Amid Middle East Conflict
Belgium's imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in July were exclusively from Russia, according to Bloomberg ship-tracking data. The 0.4 million tons delivered during this period is a significant portion of Belgium's LNG market, which was smaller than usual due to disruptions caused by the Middle East war.
The conflict has made it difficult for European economies to secure supplies, leading many buyers to rely on Russian gas. This shift in supply dynamics is not unique to Belgium, as Russia remains the EU's second-largest LNG supplier after the United States.
Belgium's position highlights the EU's reliance on Russian LNG and the challenges facing its phaseout plan. The bloc aims to ban short-term Russian LNG deals by next year, but industry watchers have questioned whether this goal is achievable given ongoing supply disruptions.
