Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed confusion over the sudden spike in oil prices to $88.15 on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, calling it 'noise' he couldn't explain.

The surge came a day after President Trump announced an 'Economic D-Day' against Iran, targeting Iranian financial institutions and oil-smuggling networks.

Bessent previewed the campaign on Thursday, Aug. 13, describing it as 'a combination of economic isolation like the world has never seen before,' alongside continued blockade measures at the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait's closure by Iran has effectively cut vessel traffic from 130 to just 8 ships daily, blocking a route that carries one-fifth of global oil supply.
