Bessent Faces G20 Diplomacy Test Amid Trade Uncertainty
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is facing a major diplomatic test at this week's G20 meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. The agenda includes shrinking global trade imbalances, boosting growth, and severing business ties to Iran, all while addressing rising U.S. debt and bond yields.
The meeting comes at a time of great uncertainty due to the ongoing trade war with Canada, high energy prices caused by the Iran conflict, and concerns over the Strait of Hormuz remaining closed. Bessent has warned countries that they face secondary U.S. sanctions if they continue to buy Iranian oil or facilitate other transactions with Tehran.
China's exports have surged 23.9% in July year-on-year, fueled by weak domestic demand and a doubling down on export-driven growth. European officials are keen to discuss the growing flood of Chinese goods, including autos and semiconductors, which is threatening their industries.
The U.S. has shown little interest in reducing its own fiscal deficits, which have doubled since 2017 under the Trump administration. Total U.S. public debt crossed the $40 trillion mark on August 19, causing markets to grow edgy about the future U.S. debt trajectory.
