Bessent Unleashes Economic War on Iran with Operation Economic Outcast
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has launched a new round of economic sanctions targeting Iran's global lifelines, dubbed 'Operation Economic Outcast'. The move, described by the administration as an 'economic D-Day', aims to sever every economic lifeline sustaining Iran's government.
Bessent warned on X that the measures will be the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary. He stated that the Trump administration's objective is to target Iran's remaining revenue streams, including secondary sanctions on countries, companies, and financial networks that continue to buy, transport, or otherwise facilitate Iranian oil trade.
The new sanctions come as Iran's rial has fallen to a record low of 2.02 million to the U.S. dollar, with the International Monetary Fund forecasting Iran's economy will contract by more than 5% this year due to nearly six months of war.
