US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned of severe economic consequences for Iran as Washington prepares to announce its strictest ever sanctions against the country. In an opinion piece published in the Financial Times, Bessent described the upcoming move as 'an economic D-Day, the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary.'

The US is already restricting Iranian oil sales and other economic activities, and has maintained a naval blockade against the country. Iran's Secretary of the National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaee, has warned that if the economic war on Iran continues, not a 'single drop of oil will be exported,' either through the Strait of Hormuz or anywhere in the Persian Gulf.

Bessent has also stated that any country still allying itself with Iran will become a 'global pariah.'
