BHP Copper Surge Drives Record JSE Valuation
BHP has reached a record high on the JSE, with its value breaching R4-trillion. The mining giant's copper assets have driven this growth, as prices for the metal continue to rise. In 2026, BHP reported record output from its iron ore business and declared an $8.7 billion dividend.
The price of copper hit a new record on the London Metal Exchange in 2026, breaking above $14,000 a tonne. BHP's CEO, Brandon Craig, has said that the company is expanding its Escondida mine in Chile and developing a project called Vicuna in Argentina with Lundin Mining.
BHP's copper assets have been key to its success, and the company plans to grow its production by 3-4% annually until 2035. The group has a strong portfolio of low-cost, long-life assets in Australia and the Americas, which provide robust cash flows.
