BIS Expands Silver Jewelry Testing Labs Amid Rising Demand
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is expanding its testing labs to meet growing demand for hallmarked silver jewelry, driven by rising gold prices.
Since introducing Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) numbers for silver articles in September 2025, the number of hallmarked silver jewelry pieces has increased to 5.9 million in the 2025-26 fiscal year from 3.2 million in 2024-25.
BIS Deputy Director General (Laboratories) Nishat S Haque said that the agency will be able to handle silver jewelry testing within its own labs for the next two years, with referral and assay laboratories expanding across the country during this time.
