Bitcoin Defies Global Market Turmoil, Holds Above $77,000 Amid Middle East Tensions
Bitcoin maintained its value above $77,000 despite heightened tensions between the US and Iran, which sent oil prices surging and global markets into a tailspin. The conflict in the Middle East had a ripple effect on financial markets, causing gold to drop 0.8% to $4,418 an ounce and Nasdaq futures to slip 0.5%. However, Bitcoin bucked this trend, posting a gain of 23% for August.
The recent strength in Bitcoin has been attributed to inflows into US spot exchange-traded funds, which have seen $2.8 billion in net inflows over the past two weeks. Additionally, expectations of increased liquidity following the Treasury Department's expansion of its bond buyback program have contributed to the token's resilience.
The Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh stated at the Jackson Hole symposium that inflation has not been contained enough and that current financial conditions are hardly restrictive. This led to a recalibration of US rate expectations, with markets now pricing in about a 58% chance of a rate increase in September.
