Bitcoin Surges Past $80K as Oil and Gold Prices Rise Amid AI Cyberattack Fears
Global markets were influenced by various factors on Thursday, including developments in artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies. OpenAI, along with other companies, issued an open letter calling for governments and businesses to strengthen defenses against AI-enabled cyberattacks.
The companies urged the creation of a leadership priority around cyber defense, addressing existing vulnerabilities in software, and improving coordination between technology industry leaders and government agencies.
Bitcoin rose as much as 2% to $80,122, surpassing the $80,000 level for the first time since May. The cryptocurrency's rebound was linked to renewed ETF demand and stronger risk appetite following Nvidia's latest results and outlook.
Oil prices also increased, with Brent crude rising 2.6% to $90.14 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate gaining 1.9% to $83.81. This was due to reduced expectations of a near-term diplomatic breakthrough between the US and Iran that could restore energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
Gold prices also rose as a weaker dollar supported demand for the precious metal. Spot gold gained 0.3% to $4,606.90 an ounce, while US gold futures settled 0.18% higher at $4,661.
