The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to a renewed blockade of the Black Sea, crippling the country's agriculture sector. The blockade, which began in June, has been a response to Ukraine's drone strikes against Russian oil refineries and online retailers' warehouses.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on allies to cover a €27 billion gap for Ukraine's air defense needs, citing the need to protect the country's critical infrastructure. The blockade has had a devastating impact on Ukraine's economy, with 90% of its agricultural exports relying on the Black Sea.

Oleh Nivievskyi, an associate professor at the Kyiv School of Economics, notes that the consequences of the blockade weigh far heavier on Ukraine than on Russia. 'For Russia, this is an asymmetric issue, because yes, they export a lot of grain, predominantly wheat,' he said.

Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotsky has warned that the country's grain storage shortfall could reach as much as 11 million metric tonnes. With domestic prices low compared to world market prices, farmers are struggling to decide whether it is worthwhile to bring in their harvests or keep them in the field.
