Black Sea Conflict Creates Uncertainty in Grain Markets
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine's Black Sea region is having a significant impact on grain markets. Exporters are struggling to utilize ports due to Ukrainian attacks, particularly at key Russian export ports like Novorossiysk and Kavkaz.
'Ukraine is following a strategy of using ordnance too cheap to be worth shooting down,' said Anna Harouni, associate agriculture editor at Argus Media. 'Russia lacks the alternative ports to move grain onto world markets.'
The uncertainty surrounding grain exports has created solid premiums in the market. However, Ms. Harouni cautioned that if hostilities were to pause, these premiums would likely disappear quickly.
Total production through Ukraine, Romania, and Russia is down slightly, but the winter wheat crop, which is higher quality and more widely exported, is making up for it. The make-up of this year's crop will be more towards exportable grain due to its proximity to Black Sea ports.
