Black Sea Conflict Drives Up US Wheat Futures as Grain Movement Uncertainty Grows

The uncertainty surrounding grain movement in the Black Sea due to the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine has led to a sharp increase in US Wheat futures prices. On Friday, the wheat market rallied as concerns about the impact of the conflict on grain supplies grew.

Russia rejected a Ukrainian ceasefire proposal, while Ukraine's military reportedly struck a Russian gas condensate processing complex, sparking heightened concerns that have boosted wheat markets. Despite no damage to grain facilities, the uncertainty has been enough to drive up prices.

The Chicago Board of Trade also saw gains in CORN futures, with traders influenced by the advances in wheat and supply/demand estimates from the US Department of Agriculture released earlier in the week. The USDA's cuts to US corn yields and ending stocks projections remained supportive, but revisions to US corn production were higher than expected due to increased area.

Soybean futures also rose, driven by solid export demand, with the USDA reporting private export sales of 136,000 tonnes of soybeans to China. The updated US soybean crush data is set to be released on Monday, with average pre-report trade estimates forecasting the July crush at 221.5 million bushels, a 3.3% increase from June and 13.2% above the previous record for the month.
