Black Sea Conflict Sparks Rebound in Wheat Markets Amid Grain Flow Disruptions
A recent escalation of the Black Sea conflict has disrupted grain flows, leading to a rebound in wheat markets. The conflict, which involves Russia and Ukraine, has made shipping increasingly difficult, with 136 commercial vessels attacked at Russian and Ukrainian ports in recent months.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has raised its forecast for Ukrainian wheat production to 25.4 million metric tons and corn output to 31.8 million metric tons, but lowered export forecasts for both commodities due to the disruptions.
Ukrainian grain exports have plummeted 76% year-on-year in August, while US farmers may benefit from reduced Ukrainian supplies and continued disruption to trade flows across the Black Sea, potentially leading to record corn exports for a second consecutive year.
