Black Sea Disruptions Fuel Wheat Futures Surge
Wheat futures surged on Wednesday, benefiting cash bids for farmers in Western Canada as they begin bringing their crop to market.
Jonathan Meyer, Senior Trader with JGL Commodities, noted that wheat markets saw a significant rally during trading, led by gains in both Chicago and Minneapolis spring wheat futures.
'It was a nice little run on wheat,' Meyer said. 'I think we saw Chicago go limit up and we saw the spring wheat futures up 30 cents.'
The rally translated into stronger cash bids for producers, with some seeing bids between $8.50 and $9 per bushel for spring wheat.
Meyer attributed the strength in wheat futures to concerns surrounding grain movement from the Black Sea region, which has prompted traditional buyers to seek supplies from alternative exporting countries.
