Black Sea Exports: The New Global Grain Hub
Two countries, Russia and Ukraine, are expected to provide about 29% of global wheat exports in the 2026-27 season, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Together with other Black Sea exporters, they account for a significant share of the world's grain trade.
The region's ports play a crucial role in exporting agricultural products. Ukraine's Odesa region alone accounts for more than 90% of the country's grain and vegetable oil exports, which are vital for its war-weakened economy.
Disruptions to navigation in the Black Sea can have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only wheat prices but also other grains and crops. A prolonged blockage could lead farmers to store their crops rather than sell them at low prices, reducing production in future seasons.
