Black Sea Grain Disruptions Spark Global Wheat Shortage
The Black Sea region's grain infrastructure has been under attack, causing a reduction in deliveries to global wheat importers. This disruption is particularly affecting countries such as Egypt and Indonesia, which rely heavily on imports from the region.
Futures prices for wheat have surged by over 17% on the Chicago exchange due to the reduced supply from the Black Sea area. The attacks between Russia and Ukraine have led to the closure of key grain terminals, forcing carriers to postpone or cancel shipments.
Egypt, which sources around 82% of its imports from Russia and Ukraine, is feeling pressure in the private sector as a result of this shortage. Indonesia, meanwhile, is seeking alternative supply sources from other countries to mitigate the impact.
