Black Sea Port Attacks Fuel Global Food Price Fears

The escalating attacks on ships and ports in the Black Sea have sent shockwaves through international markets, sparking fears of a new crisis for global food prices. Russia and Ukraine are among the world's top wheat suppliers, accounting for roughly 30% of global market share. Disruptions to grain exports from these countries could trigger a significant price surge.

Benchmark wheat futures have risen close to three-year highs in response to growing disruptions to export activity. Analysts warn that the impact on the wheat market will be severe, potentially worse than the closure of the Strait of Hormuz was for crude oil.

According to Oxford Economics, up to 86 million tons of exports could be affected this year, equivalent to 17% of global grain trade. This includes 52 million tons of Russian exports and 34 million tons of Ukrainian exports.
