Black Sea Port Attacks Send Global Wheat Prices Soaring
The United Nations has highlighted the significant impact of attacks on Black Sea ports on global wheat prices. Renewed attacks on civilian vessels and agricultural infrastructure have contributed to a sharp increase in wheat prices, according to a senior UN official.
Kayoko Goto, Director of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs at the UN, spoke about the situation, citing data from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Goto stated that global wheat prices have risen by 20% since the beginning of July, reaching their highest level since March 2024. This increase is attributed to the sustained attacks on Ukrainian ports, including Odesa, Chornomorsk, Pivdennyi, Izmail, and Mykolaiv.
The attacks have also disrupted maritime navigation in the Sea of Azov, with reports indicating that more than 100 ships were struck this month. The impact of these attacks is evident in the rising wheat prices, which are affecting global food security.
