Black Sea Violence Threatens Global Food Security
The Black Sea region has been a vital source of wheat, corn, and barley for many nations that rely on grain imports. However, recent military actions have disrupted grain shipments, making it difficult for shipping companies to secure insurance coverage.
This has led to numerous vessels avoiding the Black Sea waters, putting upward pressure on wheat prices. The region is essential for moving food around the world, and the longer it remains hazardous, the greater the threat to global food security.
The disruption of grain shipments affects not only import-dependent countries but also agricultural trade in general. Low water levels along the Danube River and maintenance work on rail networks in Eastern Europe are hampering overland routes meant to carry Ukrainian grain instead of Black Sea shipping.
