Black Sea Wheat Exports Under Threat as Drone Strikes Escalate
Russian drone attacks on ships and port facilities in the Black Sea are escalating, threatening to choke off wheat exports and drive up global prices.
The Russian Union of Grain Exporters and Producers warned that the disruption could lead to famine in some of the world's poorest nations, with a potential shortage of 30-35 million metric tons of wheat.
This represents roughly 15% of total global wheat trade, which cannot be filled by alternative suppliers, the union said.
The warning came as both Russia and Ukraine have intensified attacks on each other's agricultural export infrastructure and commercial vessels in recent weeks.
