Bloomberg Index Surges on Wheat Price Spike Amid Black Sea Disruptions
The global agricultural commodity prices saw a sharp rise in August, according to the Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index. This index tracks price movements for ten key agricultural commodities and rose by more than 13 per cent last month.
This surge is close to the sharpest seen in July 2012, with wheat being one of the main drivers of this growth. Prices have risen to a three-year high due to heightened risks to supplies from the Black Sea region. Attacks on port infrastructure and shipping have slowed exports from Ukraine and Russia, which together account for over a quarter of global wheat trade.
Rising energy and transport logistics costs, amid the ongoing war in Iran, are adding pressure on agricultural markets. The combination of expensive raw materials, energy, and logistics is fuelling fears of renewed food inflation and rising costs for staple goods like bread, meat, and dairy products.
