Bonnyville Residents Raise Concerns Over Proposed Carbon Capture Project

A recent town hall meeting in Bonnyville, Alberta, drew about 75 attendees who expressed concerns over the proposed Pathways Project, a massive carbon capture and storage megaproject.

The project, led by Oil Sands Alliance, aims to capture CO2 emissions from oil sands facilities across northern Alberta and store them near Cold Lake, Bonnyville, and St. Paul.

Nigel Robinson, an outreach coordinator with Keepers of the Water, highlighted the risks and impacts associated with the project, citing a recent community engagement report that outlines potential environmental hazards, including water contamination and pipeline ruptures.

Several residents shared their concerns, including Mark Hunt, a Glendon area resident who has experience managing high-risk pipelines in the oil and gas industry. He warned about the dangers of CO2 pipelines and emphasized the need for more information on carbon capture technology and its associated risks.
