BP Soars on Q2 Earnings Surge Amid Global Energy Price Boom
BP reported a significant surge in second-quarter earnings on August 4, exceeding Wall Street expectations. The oil major's underlying replacement cost profit jumped to $5.73 billion, more than doubling from $2.35 billion in the same period last year.
The company's revenue climbed 47% year-over-year to $70.1 billion, surpassing estimates of $64.3 billion. Shares rose around 1% in premarket trading following the release.
BP attributed its strong performance to higher energy prices, increased refining margins, and robust oil trading results. The company's Customers & Products segment was a key earnings driver, with underlying replacement cost profit before interest and tax reaching $4.95 billion.
However, operational challenges weighed on production, with upstream output falling 6% quarter-over-quarter to 2.2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. New CEO Meg O'Neill acknowledged that the company's performance had fallen short of expectations, outlining a turnaround strategy aimed at addressing years of underperformance.
