BP's Tangguh LNG Facility Under Threat From Wildfire in Papua
A wildfire in Papua's eastern region is approaching BP's Tangguh LNG facility, prompting authorities to deploy security personnel and prepare for possible evacuation. According to Djoko Siswanto, head of the upstream oil and gas regulator SKK Migas, the fire had previously been about 600 metres from the facility but has now moved within 100 metres.
Police have been deployed to secure the LNG facilities, and workers at the site have been instructed to wear masks due to smoke from the fire. Ground firefighting operations have been hampered by conditions in the area, prompting SKK Migas and BP Tangguh to deploy aircraft to fight the fire from the air.
SKK Migas is seeking to add three more aircraft to support aerial firefighting efforts, said Djoko. Worker safety and the security of oil and gas facilities are the main priorities, with evacuation preparations in place if the fire moves closer to the facilities.
