Braun Declares Energy Emergency, Extends Gas Tax Suspension
Indiana Governor Mike Braun has announced an energy emergency due to disruptions in global energy distribution. He cited the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Canadian wildfires disrupting the Alberta Oil Sands Region as reasons for extending the state's gas tax suspension.
The suspension, which was set to end on Friday, will now continue for another 30 days. Braun initially suspended the gas taxes after President Donald Trump launched a war with Iran in February, resulting in increased pump prices.
Indiana's gasoline taxes include an excise tax of 37 cents per gallon and a gasoline use tax that is effectively the state 7% sales tax collected on gasoline. The statewide average gasoline price was $3.57 per gallon on Wednesday, which is lower than the national average of $4.08.
