Brazil's Agricultural Sector Struggles with Infrastructure Shortfalls

Brazil's agricultural sector, which accounts for one-quarter of the country's national economic activity, is facing significant challenges due to inadequate infrastructure. According to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture, Brazil's prodigious grain and oilseeds production is putting strain on transport infrastructure.

The FAS noted that static storage capacity is the most significant vulnerability in the production chain, with a structural deficit of 135 million tonnes. This means that Brazil can only store about 62% of its production, with just 17% of that capacity situated on rural properties.

As a result, Brazilian grain exports primarily rely on road transportation, which creates a logistical bottleneck. The country currently operates with an estimated surplus of 70,000 trucks on long-distance routes, and the hiring of trucks during periods when freight costs are elevated is necessary due to the lack of storage.

To reduce costs and logistical challenges, the agribusiness sector has adopted the backhaul strategy, which involves using the same fleet that delivers grain to ports to return to production regions carrying fertilizer. This approach is especially important in Brazil's 'Northern Arc', where fertilizer imports are rising.
