Brazil's Corn Ethanol Industry Seeks Global Growth Amid Sustainability Concerns

Brazil's corn ethanol industry is expanding rapidly, but producers face a significant challenge in convincing international markets that their growth can be sustainable. The industry needs to address concerns over deforestation and competition with food production, said Gustavo Mariano, Vice President of Inpasa Trading.

Brazil has demonstrated its ability to sharply increase corn supplies, with safrinha corn production expected to exceed 110 million metric tons this year. However, the country still needs to explain its agricultural model to overseas consumers, who tend to view the food-versus-fuel debate as a zero-sum game.

Brazil has made progress in international discussions over deforestation and biofuels, but more work is needed to convince European policymakers that additional crops can complement existing production and improve farm profitability. The corn ethanol industry is also watching negotiations at the International Maritime Organization, which could determine whether ethanol qualifies as a lower-emission fuel for meeting the shipping industry's decarbonization targets.

The opportunity for Brazil's corn ethanol industry to qualify as a maritime fuel could create an estimated annual market of $14 billion to $28 billion. Even a small share of the shipping fuel market could create substantial new demand, according to Inpasa's International Trading Director Renato Zicardi.
