Brent Crude Surges Above $100 as Red Sea Attacks and Kazakhstan Disruptions Tighten Supplies
The global oil market has seen a sharp rebound in prices, reaching above $100 per barrel for Brent crude. This surge comes after recent attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and a disruption to Kazakhstan's exports.
Fresh attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi rebels on two Saudi oil tankers have raised concerns about disruptions to the Bab el-Mandeb shipping route, which is crucial for global oil supply. The Houthis had previously announced a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, sending oil through pipelines to bypass Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump warned that he would 'hold Iran responsible' for any further attacks and threatened 'major military punishment' against the Houthi rebels in Yemen if they continued attacking ships. Analyst Tony Sycamore noted that 'the noose around global energy supply routes is pulling tighter again.'
Kazakhstan's oil production has also been temporarily reduced due to suspected Ukrainian drone attacks on its main Black Sea export terminal, which carries about 2% of global daily crude supply.
