Brent Crude Surges Past $90 as US-Iran Tensions Escalate
The price of Brent crude oil surged past $90 a barrel on August 31st, marking a significant shift in sentiment after weeks of optimism regarding US-Iran de-escalation. The rally comes despite US-Iran talks appearing close to a breakthrough, but every new military exchange pushes oil prices back up again.
The core concern for traders is not the exchange of fire itself, but what it signals for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for roughly a fifth of the world's daily oil supply. A sustained move higher in Brent creates a direct and immediate currency risk for India, which imports most of its crude requirements.
The mechanism is simple: higher crude prices increase India's dollar demand, making crude even costlier in rupee terms. Oil marketing companies and other downstream users see margins compressed when input costs rise faster than retail prices can adjust.
