Brent Crude Surpasses $100 as Global Markets React to Middle East Tensions
Global markets took a cautious tone on Wednesday as investors monitored potential developments in interest rates and the ongoing conflict in Iran. The price of Brent crude oil surpassed $100 a barrel, further exacerbating concerns over inflation.
The international standard for oil prices, Brent crude rose 2.5% to $100.39 a barrel, while US crude gained 1.9% to $94.85 a barrel. This increase in oil prices is putting pressure on consumers worldwide as they deal with higher costs of living.
Major indices such as the CAC 40 and DAX declined 1.1% and 0.9%, respectively, while Britain's FTSE 100 shed 0.5%. The future for the S&P 500 was nearly unchanged, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.2%.
Japan's central bank will meet next week to decide on its benchmark rate, with market watchers expecting an increase. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made public remarks criticizing Japanese government policies that favor a weak yen.
