Brent Nears $100 Mark Amid Escalating Tensions in West Asia
Brent oil futures neared $100 a barrel on Wednesday due to increased tensions in West Asia. At 9:43 am, November Brent oil futures were at $99.34, up by 1.45%, and October crude oil futures on WTI (West Texas Intermediate) were at $94.22, up by 1.28%. The escalation of the situation led Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey from ING Think to state that the market is likely to continue pricing in a sizeable risk premium.
According to US Central Command, its forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers on September 8, following an attempted attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) with ballistic missiles. The vessels were rendered inoperable before being struck, and their crews were directed to abandon ship.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital choke point for oil flows, with estimates suggesting that around 10 million barrels per day are moving through it, about 50% of pre-war levels. These volumes now seem more consistent with what the US had previously indicated was passing through this critical point.
