Brent Oil Nears $100 Mark as Middle East Tensions Escalate
Oil prices have risen by more than 1% and are approaching the $100 mark per barrel, a level not seen since July. Brent oil reached $99.67 per barrel on September 9, according to AFP.
The increase is attributed to escalating Middle East tensions, which have raised concerns about disrupted oil supplies. The US-Iran conflict has been ongoing for seven months and shows no signs of abating, despite statements from the White House suggesting a possible near agreement.
Iran continues to control the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global oil and gas transportation. The country has warned of targeting oil tankers off Kuwait and Bahrain, while Houthi and Saudi Arabia continue to fight in the Red Sea, increasing the risk to oil shipping routes.
Rising oil prices pose a new problem for central banks, as high energy costs risk prolonging inflationary pressure. Expert Fawad Razaqzada of FOREX.com stated that the Middle East conflict continues to worry investors about supply disruptions and inflationary consequences from high oil prices.
