Brent Oil Price Breaks $100/bbl as US-Iran Tensions Escalate
The Brent oil price has broken through $100/bbl, but this time it's not just about the round number. The geopolitical backdrop behind the move is shifting, and investors are no longer counting on a quick de-escalation narrative to knock out the premium.
UBS energy specialist Dominic Ellis says the US-Iran 'off ramp remains elusive,' which means diplomacy is not working as expected. The US has destroyed multiple Iranian vessels in response to attacks and warned of further strikes against Iranian tankers, while Iran has struck a US base in Jordan and increased pressure on regional allies.
The tone has changed, with investors now less willing to fade geopolitical oil rallies whenever diplomacy appears capable of pulling both sides back from escalation. UBS argues that this time the pattern is becoming much harder to rely on.
