Brent Prices Rise as Iran Issues Demands for Strait Reopening
Brent crude oil prices have rebounded after Iran issued a list of demands for the US to meet before reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil chokepoint. The ICE Brent contract has gained $1.53/bbl from Friday's close, trading at $84.56/bbl at 09:00 GMT.
Tehran's demands include a complete halt to all US military action in the region and the immediate withdrawal of US naval and air forces from around Iran. These conditions must be met before commercial vessels can safely transit the Strait, which carries one-fifth of global seaborne oil flows.
Analysts at ING Bank note that oil prices remain supported by uncertainty surrounding the Strait's reopening. However, they also point out that significant hurdles remain before a broader agreement is reached between the US and Iran.
