Bulgaria's Wheat Harvest Breaks Records, But Farmers Struggle

This year's wheat harvest in Bulgaria has broken records with a total of 7.388 million tonnes, according to the Ministry of Agriculture's latest analysis.

The high yield is not cause for celebration among grain producers, however, as they face low prices and high production costs.

Domestic wheat consumption stands at around two million tonnes per year, ensuring no shortage for consumers, but leaving farmers struggling to make ends meet.

The National Grain Producer Association warns that the trend could lead to a reduction in arable land as 35% of Bulgaria's grain-producing farms have disappeared over the past five years due to bankruptcy or sale.
