BW LNG Expands Vessel Capacity with 177k cbm Three-Tank Design

BW LNG has unveiled a new 177,000-cubic-meter three-tank design for its liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, building on the success of its 174,000-cbm workhorse. The larger vessels will be built by HD Hyundai Samho and delivered between Q4 2028 and Q3 2029.

The new design increases cargo capacity by 3,000 cubic meters without changing the vessel's overall dimensions. BW LNG emphasizes that this approach retains the flexibility and terminal compatibility of the established 174k cbm vessel class.

According to the company, the three-tank configuration provides operational flexibility for partial-load conditions, while the design incorporates a lower boil-off rate that reduces natural boil-off and reliquefaction power requirements. The vessels will use GTT's Mark III membrane containment technology with reinforced membrane systems.
