California Oil Production Predicted to Decline to Zero by Mid-Century
A recent academic study on California's transition away from oil and gas production predicts that in-state production will fall to zero between 2042 and 2055. The report, which envisions a future where industry workers have found comparable jobs in other industries, suggests that getting there will require substantial state investment in areas such as training for displaced workers, remediation of oil fields, and support for public services in Kern County.
The study recommends the creation of a stabilization fund to help communities navigate economic disruption. This fund would provide financial assistance during times of transition, allowing communities to adapt more smoothly. The report also emphasizes the need for focused support for certain public sectors, such as education and healthcare, which will be critical in addressing the social and economic impacts of the shift away from oil production.
