Cambodia Courts Major LNG Exporters Ahead of First Plant Launch
Cambodia is attracting interest from major liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporters ahead of its first plant coming online by next year, according to Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rottanak. The government will evaluate both the price and stability of supply when issuing a tender and selecting a shipper, he told Bloomberg Television.
Cambodia is 'doubling down' on LNG as a transition fuel, with the new 900 megawatt plant part of a plan to diversify energy sources. Currently, the country gets about 63% of its energy from renewable sources, which has helped shield the economy from the fallout from the Middle East conflict.
The government is reducing taxes and duties on fuels despite extra budget costs of up to $60 million a month, with electricity prices remaining unchanged since the war broke out. The minister said they want to ensure industry continues to grow and that households and industries are supported during this difficult time.
