The once devastated community of Cameron Parish in Louisiana has undergone a remarkable transformation. In 2005, Hurricane Rita ravaged the area, destroying or severely damaging over 90% of homes and leaving behind a repair bill of $2.75 billion.

Fast forward to today, and the parish is on track to become one of the wealthiest counties in the region, thanks to its thriving liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry.

The world's largest LNG export terminal, Sabine Pass, was completed in 2016 and can process 29.5 million tonnes of LNG per year. The county is also home to two other LNG terminals, with a fourth under construction.

Cameron Parish is projected to receive tax revenues exceeding $4 billion over the next decade, primarily from its massive LNG exports. The US has become the world's largest supplier of LNG, with 60% coming from Louisiana, and two-thirds of that coming from Cameron Parish.

However, not everyone views this as a positive development. LNG tankers have increased ship traffic in the area, causing frustration among locals and concerns about environmental impact.
