Cameron Parish Transformed by LNG Boom

Cameron Parish in Louisiana has undergone a remarkable transformation since Hurricane Rita devastated it in 2005. The storm destroyed or badly damaged over 90% of homes, with a repair bill of $2.75bn.

Fast forward to today, and Cameron Parish is now poised to become one of the wealthiest counties in the region. This is thanks largely to the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which has made it a global energy giant.

The county's Sabine Pass LNG terminal, which began exporting fuel overseas in 2016, is the world's largest. It can process 29.5 million tonnes of LNG per year. Two other terminals are also located in the parish, and a fourth is currently under construction.

Cameron Parish is projected to receive tax revenues of over $4bn from its LNG terminals over the next decade. The US has become the world's biggest supplier of LNG, with Louisiana shipping around 60% of it. Two-thirds of Louisiana's LNG exports come from Cameron.
