The Canadian government has agreed to a timeline for the construction of an Alberta pipeline to the west coast. The federal government and the Carney-Smith deal reportedly include approval for the project by September 1, 2027.

The agreement also includes an October 1 deadline for the prime minister to designate the pipeline as being in the national interest. This will start the clock ticking towards final construction approval in September next year.

Pierre Poilievre, leader of the federal Conservative party, is skeptical of the deal and has called for a permit to be granted within 100 days of Alberta's application and for the pipeline to be under construction before Christmas.
